IFS-Informed EMDR for Adult Children of Dysfunction Wounding
Therapy can be incredibly beneficial for individuals dealing with the effects of being raised in dysfunctional homes, often referred to as Adult Children of Dysfunction or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). If you grew up in an environment characterized by alcoholism, addiction, abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, gaslighting, codependency, enmeshment, or strict religious dogma, you may be experiencing symptoms of CPTSD. Many individuals with CPTSD may have various medical and mental health diagnoses but often feel that the underlying issues are not being adequately addressed.
You might identify as an adult child of alcoholics (ACA or ACOA) or as someone coming from a dysfunctional family, and you may be struggling to piece together how all of this fits into your life.
Common symptoms of CPTSD include, but are not limited to:
- Behavioral: Impulsivity, aggression, self-destructive behavior, and misuse or overuse of substances, food, work, sex, etc.
- Emotional: Depression, hopelessness, suppressed anger, numbness, emotional dysregulation, shame, and guilt.
- Dissociation: Feelings of detachment or being split inside, losing time.
- Negative Beliefs: Persistent critical thoughts and feelings about oneself, others, or the world.
- Relationship Issues: Chaotic, codependent, or dysfunctional relationship patterns.
- Somatic Symptoms: Body aches and pains, headaches, digestive issues, and frequent doctor visits without clear medical explanations or relief.
Rather than merely treating the symptoms, we delve deeper to explore the underlying beliefs, childhood patterns, and current nervous system responses that may be unknowingly perpetuating unwanted issues in your life today. Our goal is to help you reprocess and update these old belief systems and stored physical responses into more functional and empowering ones.
When working with our therapists, you will aim for the following:
- Healing from past events and attachment wounds
- Increased compassion, curiosity, and perspective
- Improvement in destructive behavioral cycles
- Feeling safer, more connected, and empowered
- Incorporation of recovery principles into your trauma healing
Our objective is not to dwell on the past but to help you release what no longer serves you, heal what is yours to heal, and create a life defined by your values and strengths rather than your past pain.
