What is IFS-INFORMED EMDR?

At IFS EMDR Therapy Group, we use an integrative approach that combines Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR, called IFS-Informed EMDR, to help clients heal from the symptoms and emotional distress from trauma and past stressful events. These modalities provide a compassionate, non-judgmental way to understand blocks, defenses, and stuck things in your life.

IFS-Informed EMDR is rooted in the belief that our systems are brilliantly developed to protect us. These protections might create blocks or defenses that impact the EMDR and healing process. Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy offers us a helpful way to navigate these blocks and patterned defenses by honoring and welcoming ALL parts of self. In the early phases of EMDR, an IFS-Informed EMDR therapist will get to know your inner system of parts and how they might have developed and invite you to get to know your parts and build a more trusting and ultimately healing relationship with your parts.

We use IFS as a companion for EMDR. Rather than just treating symptoms or running toward your most painful stuff, we take the time to understand the protective patterns in your system and the underlying beliefs that might inadvertently be maintaining unwanted patterns in your life. Then we work to reprocess and update these old belief systems or stored somatic responses into more functional, empowering ones with the EMDR process. Learn more here.
